Abstract-based reading · consulted October 17, 2026. A selected teaching example, not a systematic review or dietary recommendation. Full-text methods, funding, registration and risk of bias have not been assessed.

Study design
Randomized, double-blind, parallel, multicentre trial.
Who took part
367 randomized; 345 completed. Baseline LDL: 3.0–5.0 mmol/L.
Studied preparation
Cereals providing 3–4 g daily oat β-glucan of differing molecular weights.
Compared with
Wheat-fibre cereal.
Time frame
Four weeks.
What was measured
Blood LDL cholesterol.
Reported finding
For 3 g high-molecular-weight β-glucan, LDL was 0.21 mmol/L lower than control (95% CI: 0.11–0.30 lower). Two medium-weight conditions also reduced LDL; the low-weight condition was not significant.
Uncertainty
The interval describes uncertainty around a group contrast, not a range of individual benefits. The highlighted contrast is one of four tested formulations.
What this cannot tell us
A formulated cereal and a four-week blood marker do not establish the effect of every bowl of oats or a reduction in heart attacks.

What disappears when we just say “oats”?

Underline the studied form before interpreting the result. Then distinguish a blood marker from a clinical event and a group estimate from an individual prediction.
