Learn the names

A familiar common name is a useful beginning. A botanical name makes the question more precise. This collection introduces six named herbs and keeps each plant connected to its own botanical reference.

Look at the useful details

Notice whether the recipe calls for a leaf, a tender stem, or a seed; whether the herb is fresh or dried; and whether it enters a pot early or finishes a dish. These details are small enough to overlook and useful enough to write down.

Take a card with you

Save a profile to your recipe box and return to it as you encounter the ingredient. These are introductory kitchen profiles, not a regional planting calendar or a guide to identifying wild plants.
