THE STORY
In the National Trust for Scotland’s account of a Burns supper, dessert may be cranachan: oatmeal with cream, raspberries and whisky. Food shares the occasion with poetry and convivial remembrance.1
This reading follows the National Trust for Scotland’s guide, rather than a survey of household menus.1
The guide places suppers on or around January 25, Burns’s birthday, while allowing other dates. It locates the first supper in Burns Cottage, Alloway, in 1801.1
Reading this account
Oats enter this story through a particular dish. A suggested menu is evidence for that account, not a rule for every Scottish table. The linked savory oats card contains a separate contemporary editorial preparation; it does not reconstruct a Burns supper.1
What the source leaves open. Cranachan is an optional dessert in this source, not a requirement or a reconstruction of the 1801 menu.
